Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC)

PNC Passage:
The PNC is still hard at work, listening for God's direction to discern who might be
the next pastor to lead Cottonwood into the future. So far nearly 80 Pastor
Information Forms (i.e. resumes) have been carefully reviewed by each PNC
member. An initial series of phone interviews have been conducted, with several
qualified candidates. We are all encouraged and optimistic, however, there is still
a great deal of work to be done. This is not a quick process. Please continue your
prayers for each of the PNC members, our efforts as a group and for all of the
candidates we have reviewed. No doubt, God has great plans for each of them.
As always, a great big "attitude of gratitude" for Pastor Jeff's continued support!

Finance and Stewardship:
In preparation for a new pastor at Cottonwood, the Finance & Stewardship Committee will undertake paying off the remaining balance of the kitchen remodel loan using funds from the reserve account.  Both Session and Finance feel it is important that Cottonwood be able to show that the church is debt-free to pastor candidates as well as when a new pastor is selected.  Therefore, if anyone would like to make a contribution to paying off the loan or if there any outstanding kitchen remodel pledges that are unfulfilled, please make your donations as soon as possible.  Donations large and small will help tremendously.  If making a donation, please be sure to clearly indicate that it is for the kitchen remodel loan.  Donations can be given during Sunday worship service offertory.  As always thank you for your very generous financial support.

Eating to lose weight
A well-balanced eating plan can help you lose weight.
This article gives tips for changes you can make to help
with weight loss.
How can I lose weight?
• Obesity is caused by taking in more food calories than you burn up. The extra food
energy is stored as fat.
• Losing weight involves changing your energy balance so that you burn more energy
than you take in with the food you eat. You can lose 1 to 2 pounds a week by making
the following changes:
– Reduce the number of calories you eat.
Eat 1000 to 1200 calories a day for women.
Eat 1200 to 1600 calories a day for men.Do not go below these ranges without the OK of your doctor.
– Increase your physical activity.
Set a goal of 30 to 60 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.
Start slowly and work up to your goal.
Talk to your doctor before starting an exercise program if you have not
been active recently.
What kinds of foods should I eat?
• Include the following foods in your eating plan:
– High-fiber foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole-grain breads and
cereals, and peas or beans
– Heart-healthy fish that is baked, broiled, or grilled (not fried). Some heart healthy
fish to try are fresh tuna, salmon, herring, or cod.
– Healthy protein, such as chicken or turkey without the skin, lean cuts of beef or
pork, tofu, or eggs.
– Healthy carbohydrates (foods that are high in starch and sugar), such as fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, beans and lentils, and low-fat dairy products.
– "Good" fats, such as the kind found in olive, canola, and peanut oils; avocados,
almonds, walnuts, and olives.
• Choose healthy snack foods, such as:
– Fruits and vegetables
– Nonfat yogurt and nonfat cottage cheese
– Low-salt pretzels and low-fat whole-grain crackers
– Unsalted almonds or other nuts and seeds (but in small amounts)
– Low-fat, low-salt popcorn
What kinds of foods should I avoid?
• Limit amounts of foods and beverages that contain simple sugars, such as soda, fruit
juice, flavored teas and waters, and most desserts.
• Avoid hard coconut or palm oil, hard margarine, shortening, lard, and foods with
trans fats.
• Check food labels for added sugar, salt, and fat. These are often found in foods and
drinks, such as:
– Fruit drinks and sweetened drinks like non-diet colas
– Desserts and canned fruits
– Breads, cereals, and crackers
What else can I do to help with weight loss?
• Plan what you are going to eat.
– Eat 3 or more small meals a day.
– Do not skip meals, especially breakfast.
– Shop from a list. Do not shop when you are hungry.
– Keep a food diary.
• Start with the proper portion size and do not go back for seconds.
– Use smaller dishes for meals.
– Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables.
– Divide the other half between protein and starch.

CROSSROADS URBAN CENTER NEEDS

Letter Carrier's Food Drive Help Needed Saturday, May 12.
Crossroads will receive all of the food from the ExpoMart Post Office. All the food must
be transported from the post office to Crossroads, sorted, boxed, and stored in our
building THAT AFTERNOON. In order to get this done, we need about 100 volunteers
to make it happen. If you can volunteer from either 2:30-4:30 p.m. or from 4:30-
6:30 p.m., please contact Linda Hilton at 801-364-7765 x 110 or
linda@crossroadsurbancenter.com. We need the most help between 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Please help us out at either time. Thanks.
Crossroads Urban Center Needs for May
Food of the month: Once again - milk and juice, any kind, any size. Would anyone
out there be interested in doing a "Drink Drive"? We continue struggling to keep liquids
on the shelf.
Thrift store items: Summer clothes and any type men's clothing. Hey guys, how
about cleaning out your drawers and closets?
Misc. item: Bags for food orders. While paper and plastic are great we are especially
looking for reusable tote bags. Look around and see if you have any from conferences
that you will never use again. Ask your friends and coworkers too!
